Fibreglass windows are relatively new, though the material itself has been around for quite some time. In the past it has been used for items such as boat hulls and auto bodies, it has an outstanding track record for durability. Because fibreglass is so strong, hollow parts can be made without the stiffeners that would be required for vinyl replacement windows. In fact insulated fibreglass windows are even more energy efficient than ones constructed from solid wood. Also, unlike vinyl, you can paint fibreglass windows and they won't deteriorate when the finish wears away. The downside of choosing fibreglass for your windows is that they are more expensive than ones made from other materials.

Wood windows are probably the ones that are most commonly found in homes. They can be painted or stained, and wood is a strong material that is easy to work with. Because it is an easy material to work with it opens up potential for customised windows, and detailed designs are often made from wood. With regards to energy efficiency, there are few insulators than can top wood. Probably the biggest downside of using wood for your windows is the fact that it does require quite regular maintenance. Peeling paint is more than just an eye sore it is actually a sign that the wood is beginning to rot from exposure to the elements. There are a handful of manufacturers that produce a water resistant mahogany.
New wood windows can effectively enhance your homes visual appeal. Wood windows are available in a range of colours and designs, and if you still can't find what you want it is a versatile material that can be used for customised designs. Wood is an excellent insulator and although wood can rot there are finishes that can protect it against such deterioration. Wood is unaffected by temperature changes and less prone to condensation than other materials.
